GIMME A CRASH ON 7: An Introduction to Dance Arranging (Part I)
David Chase and Ian Weinberger
David Chase and Ian Weinberger explore the history and genesis of the craft we call dance arranging. They’ll discuss historical figures in Broadway dance arranging (Trude Rittmann, Genevieve Pitot, Peter Howard, Luther Henderson, Betty Walberg), speak with contemporary practitioners of the art, and focus on the process and techniques used to create dance music that serves story, character and movement.
The relationship between the dance arranger and the choreographer is truly symbiotic, and if the Tony committee were smart enough to recognize the contributions of dance arrangers alongside choreographers, David Chase would have 19 Tony nominations and 5 wins. But they don’t, so he doesn’t.
Ian Weinberger is spending his pandemic year earning his Master's degree, and is writing his thesis on dance arranging. He looks forward to returning to the podium at Hamilton someday soon.
David Chase has been Music Director, Music Supervisor and/or Dance Arranger for nearly 40 Broadway productions over the last 26 years. Shows for which he has written dance music have garnered 19 Tony nominations and 5 Tony awards for Best Choreography. He has 2 Emmy nominations for Music Direction for NBC’s live telecasts of The Sound of Music and Peter Pan, and a Grammy nomination for co-producing the Broadway cast album of Nice Work if You Can Get It.
Beyond the theater, David has written multiple arrangements and orchestrations for the Boston Pops and Tanglewood Festival Chorus (including their signature “Twelve Days of Christmas”), the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Kennedy Center Honors, Essential Voices USA, and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Television credits include conducting, arranging and orchestrating for various shows including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Other conducting includes numerous film scores as well as productions of Carousel, The King and I, and My Fair Lady at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
His choral arrangements are published by Hal Leonard, including a collection of folk songs called Appalachian Stories and, debuting this summer, a song-cycle entitled Washington Women, celebrating the inspiring speeches and writings of women of all political stripes who have made a positive impact on American history. David lives in New York City with his wife (and Drama Desk nominee), Paula Leggett Chase, and their two sons. His musical training: a Harvard biology degree.

His arrangements and orchestrations of Titanic and Disney’s Moana Jr. have been heard in productions around the world. Ian is a proud graduate of Northwestern University, where he studied percussion performance and music education.
