Capturing an Epic Sound with Modern Hybrid Techniques

A Masterclass with Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion, Kristopher Carter, and Larry Rench

A deep dive into the newly released film — DC’s Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons — where Kristopher, Michael and Lolita created an epic, heartwarming, orchestral/hybrid score, using creative orchestration techniques. Joining the masterclass will be orchestrator Larry Rench.

KRISTOPHER CARTER: Kristopher Carter rocked the Hollywood Bowl with his Batman Beyond suite featuring heavy metal guitar and orchestra. His passion for contemporary classical, rock and electronic dance music continues to shape his personal voice both as a film composer and Producer/DJ with his EDM project, The Kr Protocol. He is currently composing a series of pieces for piano and orchestra, initially inspired as a journal chronicling the passage of the seasons during the pandemic. The video to his first episode, “Autumn Ruminations,” won two Bronze Telly Awards, and the second, based on Winter, will debut in December.

MICHAEL McCUISTION’s multifaceted and award-winning musical career spans many genres including film, television, video games, multimedia and the concert hall. Having been mentored by film music legends including David Raksin and Irwin Kostal, his style is grounded firmly in compositional technique with an emphasis on innovation, experimentation and tight integration with story; with this approach he has served as a mentor to other aspiring composers enrolled in screen scoring programs throughout the past few years. From his whistler-performed score for the Oscar-winning short film My Mother Dreams The Satan’s Disciples In New York to his other-worldly score for Griffith Observatory’s Time’s Up planetarium feature, Michael always infuses projects with a signature dose of theme, texture and unique identity.
LOLITA RITMANIS is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Class of 2021. Her 70 minute symphonic and choral score for Blizzard of Souls made it on the Oscar shortlist in 2021, having previously earned numerous awards, including the Society of Composers and Lyricists Award for Best Score for an Independent Film.  As a producer, Lolita was awarded a Grammy® award in 2022  for her work on the album “Women Warriors: The Voices of Change.” Lolita is on faculty at USC's School  for Cinematic Arts - Screen Scoring Program,  where she is mentoring the next generation for media composers. In September, Lolita returned from Riga, Latvia, where she recorded her score for director Daniel Kreizberg’s film: Tahlequah the Whale: A Dance of Grief.  Lolita is one of the founders of the Alliance for Women Film Composers.
THESE THREE Emmy Award-winning composers have created hundreds of hours of music for a variety of different genres, including TV series, independent films, video games and live performance events. They have collectively earned twenty-eight Emmy Award nominations and nine Annie Award nominations. Credits include Batman: The Animated Series, Teen Titans, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Justice League andSpectacular Spider-Man. They each received an Emmy Award in Music Direction and Composition for their music for Batman Beyond. Original concert works and suites of their scores have been performed in festivals and special events; from New York’s Lincoln Center to The Hollywood Bowl their music has received critical acclaim. This vibrant trio exemplifies creative collaboration, business savvy, and artistic expression. Their current projects include the feature film Give Til it Hurts, Young Justice (on HBO Max) and DC’s Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, as well as a soon-to-be-released feature length top secret project.
LARRY RENCH is an orchestrator who has worked on hundreds of films, television shows, video games and concerts over the last 30 years. His career as an orchestrator began in 1990 when Shirley Walker invited him to be a part of her team for The Flash television show and he had the honor of orchestrating on her many films during the course of her life. His collaboration with Dynamic Music Partners began when he orchestrated alongside with Lolita Ritmanis and Michael McCuistion on Shirley Walker’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and has continued through the years including the Prime-time Emmy Award nominated The Brave and the Bold: Mayhem of the Music Meister, Batman: The Killing Joke, and Justice League vs the Fatal Five. Most recently he orchestrated on their score to Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons.
